Introduction:

King Dhritarashtra was blind by birth and overwhelmingly favored his own sons (Kauravas) over his brother’s sons (Pandavas) even when the latter were right. That eventually led to the colossal Mahabharata war where millions of warriors died, including all Kauravas. Since Dhritarashtra was blind he could not participate in the war. Sanjay was the messenger who was given the duty of bringing the news from the war-field to Dhritarashtra, who waited alone in his palace. The poem below describes the end of first day of the war and the broodings of Dhritarashtra as he awaited the news from Sanjay. This poem is the introductory poem in my book Geeta Kavya Madhuri that is a complete translation of Geeta into Hindi verses. धृतराष्ट्र की प्रतीक्षा

सूर्यास्त हो चल था नभ में
पर रश्मि अभी कुछ बाकी थी
अनजानी सी अनकही व्यथा
चहुं ओर महल में व्यापी थी

धृतराष्ट्र मौन हो बैठे थे
कर रहो प्रतीक्षा संजय की
गुनते थे रण में क्या होगा
चिंता पुत्रों की जय की थी

कुछ दिवस पूर्व कोलाहल था
रण की होती तैयारी थी
दल युद्ध हेतु कुछ चले गए
कुछ के जाने की बारी थी

अंधे राजा की लाचारी
सुन तो सकते थे तैयारी
पर कर सकते थे सहयोग नहीं
रण में जाने के योग्य नहीं

कल की सी लगती बात अभी
क्रीडारत घर में पुत्र सभी
पढ़ते लिखते सोते जागते
पल में हँसते पल में रोते

कितनी जल्दी दिन बीत गए
बचपन के वह संगीत गए
क्या कुल मस्तक यूँ झुक जाता
वह समय अगरचे रुक जाता

क्यों पंथ धर्म का छोड़ दिया
हठ सुत का क्यों ना तोड़ दिया
इतिहास पंथ कुल का शुभ था
क्यों विकट युद्ध में मोड दिया

अब युद्ध भयंकर होना है
अगिनित प्राणो को खोना है
कैसे मन को सांझाऊँगा
पुत्रों को हत जब पाऊँगा

लेकिन अब पछताने से क्या
जो भी होना है वह होगा
अब तो संजय आने को है
रण समाचार लाने को है

धृतराष्ट्र सोच में थे निमग्न
जब संजय ने आकर किया नमन
आतुर राजा ने मुहँ खोला
आशंकित स्वर में यह बोला…
