Nawab Wajid Ali Shah was the king of the state of Awadh (Lucknow) for 9 years (1847 to 1856). He was dethroned by the British and moved to Kolkata where he spent the last 20 years of his life missing Awadh and its culture. He was a gentle king full of compassion for his subjects and was a great patron of music, dance and culture. He played a great role in the revival of Kathak dance form. He himself danced and wrote poetry. Two samples are presented here. The first one is very well known and has been sung by many singers. Rajiv Krishna Saxena
