I have often felt that the deep frustration and pining about lost love depicted in Urdu poetry, is rarely seen in Hindi poetry. The Muslim tradition of purdah made the mixing of boys and girls very difficult and that frustration perhaps gets reflected in Urdu poetry. In Hindu tradition, such mixing was never that restricted, hence the lack of frustration in this area. This is just a thought. In any case, the following poem of Shakeel Badayuni is a prime example of deep frustration in love. A masterpiece indeed, written for the movie ĎAmarí in the year 1954! Rajiv Krishna Saxena
