Here is a beautiful poem by Girija Kumar Mathur depicting the sense of failure that a man invariably feels at the end of career. It is very difficult to define a successful life. When a man looks back at his own life, it looks mediocre and unremarkable. Last two stanza of this poem seems apologetic, almost a deliberate attempt to somehow hit an optimistic note. The two stanzas before the last two are lovely and call a spade a spade. I am tempted to paraphrase these lines;

The youth slips away, the work remains half done
active years draw to a close, our actions worthless
our achievements none
