Dr. Veerbala (Veera) was born on October 13, 1930 in Allahabad to Shri. Chiranji Lal Verma (an architect) and Smt. Chanda devi (nee Johri) (Later Principal Kanya Gurukul, Hatharas). The only other sibling she had was her elder brother, the renowned Hindi poet and writer, Dr. Dharamvir Bharati. Dr. Veerbala did her early education (Snataka) from Kanya Gurukul, Hathras and was later married to Dr. Shatendra Kumar of Delhi in 1948.
She continued her education after the marriage and completed MA (Sanskrit) and Ph.D. on the Sanskrit dramatist Bhasa, from Delhi in 1970. She taught Sanskrit at Vivekanand Mahila College, Delhi University till 1996. She was an active poetess and writer in late 1950s and early 1960s and wrote under the pen name Veera, given to her by her brother. Many of her poems and short stories were published in contemporary magazines like Saptahik Hindustan, Kadambini and Dharmayug, as also in anthologies of poems and stories. Her novel Maut ka Phool was published by National Publishing House in 1959. She published many poems also but gave up writing in later years. She has three sons, Gopal Krishna Saxena, Rajiv Krishna Saxena and Yogesh Krishna Saxena.
