Kaikayi had coerced Dashrath to give the kingdom of Ayodhya to her son Bharat and banish the elder step son Ram to forest for 14 years. Bharat loved his elder brother too much to have allowed this to happen but unfortunately he was away when all this happened. Dashrath died from the shock of these events and Ram left to live in forest along with Lakshman and Sita. When Bharat returned to Ayodhya, he was devastated at all that had happened behind his back. Following poem is a part of the Saket Mahakavya written by Rashtra Kavi Methali Sharan Gupt and describes the visit of Bharat and repentant mother Kaikayi to Ram in the forest. The purpose was to do last rites (shradhh) of father Dashrath, but the real objective was to request Ram to come back to Ayodhya and be the king as he rightly deserved. Last rites having been completed, all those present sat in an assembly. Read the following very moving lines describing the events and dialog between brothers. Meanings of some difficult words have been provided - Rajiv Krishna Saxena
