The relationship between a husband and wife is based on total faith. A girl leaves her family and adopts the family of her husband. Her expectation is that her husband will take her in full confidence and share all feelings and thoughts with her. Prince Siddharta (who later became Gautam Buddha) left his wife Yashodhara and his son while they were sleeping, without telling a word, to start his own journey to Truth. That must have shattered Yashodhara. In this famous poem by Rashtra Kavi Maithili Sharan Gupt, Yashodhara wonders would she have stopped Siddhartha, had he confided in her. “For aren’t we the ones who readily prepare and send our beloved husbands even for wars, when it is required? So why would I have said no to him, if he had just told me?” she wonders. She is greatly anguished, but she loves him and even in her anguish she tries to defend his decision of leaving without telling her. A very touching poem indeed. Yashodhara in anguish has been drawn by Garima Saxena - Rajiv K. Saxena
